The last month has been a bit of a whirlwind. At the beginning of December, I started a new job. Then, four days later, my company shut down and I lost my job. I briefly considered taking that as a sign that I was supposed to stay an independent contractor, but really, the reasons I had for going back to being a “regular employee” had not changed. And, as luck would have it, a friend knew of another job opening that was also a really good fit for me. I decided to apply for it, and I got the job. I’ll be doing project management. I won’t have any direct reports, so there will be no people management. I’ll miss people management, but I won’t miss having to write performance reviews for people, so I call that a wash. I think I’ll learn a lot in this job, which is something that is important to me, and there is likely to be room for growth as the company grows. All in all, I am feeling extremely fortunate that the drama of December resolved so nicely for me.
I know a little less about this new job than I did about the last one, so I’m even less certain of what I’ll use this space for. I’m now up to two reader questions in my queue, and I’ll try to answer at least one this month. After I run out of reader questions… we’ll see. I suspect I’ll still find something to write about from time to time.
The new job is happy to have me give the occasional seminar, and since I really enjoy giving seminars, I will probably find one or two chances to do so every year. The details of that remain to be worked out after I have settled into the new role. I still intend to keep sending out my Management Monthly newsletter.
I had thought I might write about the nuts and bolts of a running a job search, but it turns out I didn’t have to run much of a search. Still, I had started gearing up for one, so a post or two may still be forthcoming! Right now, I’m just trying to catch my breath after all the changes of the last month. Also, I swear that I’m going to actually get my garage cleaned up before I start this job! I said that about the last one, but then I got sick and last most of November. Here’s hoping January is kinder to me….
